Recently James has been researching the topic of cold water therapy (like, taking cold showers) and its effect on dopamine, mental health, etc. He's suggested to me several times that taking a cold shower might be useful ... something to do with voluntarily placing your body in a controlled stressful environment helps you manage other stressful situations (like toddlers melting down all at the same time, or doing destructive things in their attempts to learn and explore).

Cold showers are a hard no for me though! I hate cold water. Y'all, I don't even like to swim in cool water on sweltering TN summer days. Every time he suggests it, I shiver and reply that I hate cold water. He's also suggested that putting my hands in cold water for a few minutes would accomplish a similar purpose, but I haven't brought myself to do that yet.

Last night our water pipes froze and after some thawing we currently have cold running water in the kitchen, but nothing in the rest of the house and no running hot water. As I was trying to clean the kitchen sinks with cold water, while heating water in a pot to wash dishes, I suddenly had a flashback.

"Hey James, I know why I hate cold water so much."

"Yeah? Why's that?"

"Because when I was young, and we lived in the barn, we had to wash dishes and vegetables in the creek in the winter time. And it froze our fingers!"

"Yeah, that probably has something to do with it!"

"But then again, I never had any mental health issues as a child or teen, so maybe there was something to that ..."

Moral of the story - teach your children to wash turnip greens in the creek in the winter!

I am so thankful to live where we live.

Yesterday afternoon I did my big grocery shopping trip and then we went to my brother's house for dinner, so it was late by the time we arrived home. We were tired and after unloading the children, I told James I figured the temperature was good enough to leave all the groceries in the car (except for the freezer stuff) so we left them there and went to bed.

This morning, as I started unloading groceries, it occurred to me that in spite of all the problems we're facing ... inflation, food shortages, rising crime, etc ... I had just left about $350 worth of groceries sitting in my driveway, in my unlocked SUV overnight!

In hindsight, I'd probably lock the car next time just in case. But the fact that my reaction was to leave them without having any concern about it, speaks to the safety and security that we feel regarding our community. I'm thankful to be in a situation where we have the ability to get a carload of groceries and that we don't feel ...

When the baby fills his diaper and immediately falls asleep ...

... and you feel like a mean mama for disturbing this adorableness in order to change him!
